Like the previous version, Google Listen 1.1 lets you find and subscribe to podcasts from your handset.

But the new version also lets you save your subscription data to the cloud using Google Reader, which makes it easy to synchronize your podcast subscriptions across devices and make sure nothing happens to your subscription data if you switch phones, SD cards, or other settings.

There’s also a new queue screen with a refresh button for showing new episodes. There are a number of other tweaks and updates including a feed screen that’s no longer limited in size.

Update: I’ve discovered one of the down sides of synchronizing your podcast list with Google Reader. If, like me, you like to keep your Reader inbox at zero, you’ll effectively wipe out your queue of podcasts on your device that you haven’t yet listened to.

When Google sent me a Nexus One phone to review, one of the first applications I installed was the NPR News application. I like to listen to NPR programs while I’m walking around the city, cooking dinner, or working out. And the application was pretty cool, allowing me to find all sorts of NPR podcasts organized by top stories, topics, programs, and stations. But there’s one thing the NPR News Android application didn’t do… until today: stream live content from NPR member stations.

Today NPR released version 1.2 of the Android app with support for listening to live-streams from more than 600 NPR stations. You can search for stations by call sign, zip code, or just hit the “local stations” button to find radio stations in your geographical area.

Because some stations have secondary audio streams, there are actually more than 1,000 streaming audio stations you can tune into. You can also bookmark your favorite stations or create playlists from your bookmarks for later listening.

The application also has all the same features found in the previous version, including the ability to find and listen to podcasts of NPR programs.

NPR News for Android v 1.2 is available as a free download from the Android Market.

NPR’s mobile radio app, NPR News, is one of my favorite iPhone apps , and now it’s available for Android users, too. NPR News gives you quick access to live audio streams from any of NPR’s radio stations, as well as the ability to listen to archived NPR shows and segments. The Android version might be even better than the iPhone app, too, because it can run in the background.

Apart from its inability to stay open in the background (which results from an iPhone limitation, not a problem with NPR’s app), the iPhone version of NPR news seems to be the blueprint for the Android app. All the same great features are included. You can locate nearby stations using the phone’s GPS, read stories as you listen to them, add stories to a playlist. NPR News is a misleading app name, because it also includes all of NPR’s non-news offerings and some great music stations (my personal favorite is Seattle’s KEXP).

Did I mention that NPR News is free? It’s the bargain of the century, dear readers, and it’s in the Android Market now.

Tired of all the DROID talk? Well, tough cookies, mister. Nilay, Paul and Josh have a lot to say on the subject, and you’re just going to have to sit there and take it.
